Firsts historical mension of Pietrecina dates back to the twelve century when was nomimated by Falcone Beneventano with the word "Petrapulsina" that mean "small stone ". Inl 1138 was destroyed by Ruggero di Sicilia and only in 1173 was rebuild.
Today counts 3.000 people ,even if the number grown up during pilgrimage periods.
For its cultural importance, but above all religious (place of born of Padre Pio), Pietrelcina had obtained the denimantion of "city" in the 2003.
Convent of Morcone
Morcone is an ancient city of sannio which origin were studied by historian through the ruins of tthe antica Mucre, which walls are still well preserved.
The Convent fundation is dated in 1603 when Franciscan monks, called by the marchese of Morcone, settled there the 27th of may 1603, "they plant the Cross" and the day after the first stone was posed in an ancient chapel called San Filippo.
Francesco (later called Fra' Pio) knocked the convent door the 6th of genuary of 1903 and found a glad surprise : Fra Camillo who accepted him gladly and heartily, sayng: "Franci': clever, clever! You was loyal to the promise and to the divine call of San Francesco"..
This convent was famous for rigid discipline , accepted by everyone because people entered knowing had choose the hardest road of devotion for Christ so as S. Francesco abandoned every human goods was dressed only of God. Francesco the 22th of genuary 1903 in front of the mayor altar was dressed with the "saio francescano" and changed his nameFrom Francesco Forgione to Fra' Pio da Pietrelcina. His engagement is evident in an autobiographic letter in 1922: "Che Gesu mi faccia la grazia di essere un figlio degno di San Francesco. Che possa essere di esempio ai miei fratelli in modo che il fervore continui sempre e si accresca sempre di più in me, da far di me un perfetto cappuccino" (wonder Christ i could be a worthy son of San Francesco.Could i be an example for my brothers so that the fervour still and grows ever more in me, so that i could be a perfect capuchin).
San Giovanni Rotondo
San Giovanni Rotondo is a small place situated in the Gargano.
The place is dominated by the Monte Calvo hight 1065 meter, which is the highest mount in the Gargano.
First news on this place are dated 1095 with the denomination of the Angioini and of Aragonesi,due to its good geographic position historian tinks that other population lived there. There are many signs of theirs passagge.
Even if is a rich territory, It is hard to live there cause many earthquake had devasted since 1600 , causing epidemic diffusion maked worse by bad hygienical condition of that period. only afther 1700 San Giovanni Rotondo begun to reborn thanks of costruction of public and snaitary structures. Even if, when another earthquake, with flood and new epidemic problems, devasted the place, it was 1800.
In the 1900 the place is drain and it took to grow again when arrive the guest which will change the destiny of the place: Padre Pio da Pietrelcina. This man , under the guide of the faith, builds Structures of public useful: the "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" and the modern sanctuary build near the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
